About ZATI
ZATI is in its 8th successful year.
It is a non-governmental, non-religious, and non political organization, established to represent the interests of all tourism investors in Zanzibar.
The aim is to ensure a sustainable and professional tourism industry of the highest standard, working with Government institutions to achieve this.
We have grown by 25% in 2009 and 2010, broadened our base to encompass more tourism support industries, more Zanzibar-owned hotels and tour companies, and encouraged smaller businesses and wider geographical spread around the island. We currently have 120 members, representing all areas of the tourism sector including hotels, restaurants, tour operators, airlines, wholesale suppliers, fashion, jewellery and souvenir retail gift shops, printers and publishers, healthcare and business services.
As ever, membership is restricted to companies operating in the tourism sector, who hold valid business licenses issued by the government, and are registered with the TRA and ZRB.
The main annual activities for ZATI are :
- ZATI Strategic Plan – To position ZATI for growth and achievement

Steering committee and Committee member in the Zanzibar Business Council Steering Committee, Secretariat and Committee member on the Zanzibar Tourism Private / Public Dialogue
Since 2009 we have focussed, with the guidance of our membership, on our three main identified strands – Infrastructure, Supplies, and Staff and have held many meetings with both private and public sector organisations to this end. Please see our new brochure ZATI 2009-2010 for details of these.
In 2010 our seat on the Zanzibar Business Council helped us to dialogue with the Public Sector on Infrastructure, we focussed on local agriculture and community manufacturers and suppliers, and we have worked with the Commission for Tourism on visit exit surveys, tourist arrival numbers and investor databases as well as the new Zanzibar Destination Marketing Strategy and Plan.
In 2011 we have set out agenda based on the members’ suggestions in our last AGM and will sit on the Public / Private Tourism dialogue forum to continue to make our voices heard. We will be more active in representing our members at trade fairs, exhibitions and conferences, and will actively be helping to promote Destination Zanzibar. ZATI has been approached to bring to Zanzibar some proposed new Responsible Tourism standards that are to be introduced in Tanzania, so members will also have the opportunity to be evaluated and rated in the future as we help to roll-out the new Responsible Tanzania Tourism Guidelines.
ZATI annual membership fees for 2011 are once again unchanged from last year and based on the number of employees that members have. ZATI membership entitles the following:
- The right to vote, and to be voted for, in any election of the association
- To receive all services and communications offered by the association
- To be assisted in solving business issues
- To lodge disputes or conflicts for help of resolving and settlement
- To have access to business information and various relevant reports and research findings.
ZATI also asks of its members that they offer a quality tourism product in their field of expertise, uphold high standards of business ethics, respect the customs of Zanzibar, follow all labour, fiscal and environmental regulation, and where possible actively buy locally and employ locally by encouraging projects that involve or benefit their local community.
2011 promises to be an exiting and interesting year for tourism in Zanzibar, and we look forward to guiding you and helping you to voice your opinions. Thank you supporting us to assist you to meet your objectives.
